Is Roxas a hero or villain?
Roxas' story is basically his journey from villain to hero. He is recruited prior to the start of 358/2 Days into what we know from KH2 to be the villainous Org XIII--but he doesn't share any of the unscrupulous motivations. He is one of the villain team but he is an innocent being, yet he does what he's told and aids their goals because he's complacent with that at the beginning. He starts as an anti-villain but doesn't actually ever become a straight villain despite gradually gaining awareness and perspective because he is inherently a good person, thus he performs acts of heroism while advancing the agenda of the villains as one of them and eventually breaks away completely from them once he's had enough at the climax of 358/2 Days. At this point he has become an anti-hero; he may no longer serve the villains but his motivations are selfish as he wishes to stop them out of spite for what they did to him and his friends. Unfortunately, he runs into fellow anti-hero Riku and is captured so Sora can enter the picture again. This leads to the start of KH2 where Roxas briefly leads a simple life of an innocent boy before eventually his past comes back to him. He becomes the anti-hero once more to fight off Axel before finally giving up and putting down his keyblade so the hero of the story (Sora) can return to the stage. The whole bit with their duel at the start of the World That Never Was is a bit hard for me to place though. When he finally does come back properly near the end of KHIII he is a proper hero, now fully aligned with the warriors of light against the seekers of darkness.

Recently I bought the first kh pack on the epic store to play the first few games. Though I’m playing them out of order rn since everyone praises kh2. The bare minimum hour long tutorial area where you play as roxas is super heart wrenching especially cause of how ironic it is the player knows everything roxas doesn’t and wants to know. We know he wasn’t meant to be, that he’s a smaller part of sora, and other pieces of information that makes that tutorial area mean much more than just an area they teach you about game mechanics but a long in game cutscene to display the tragedy of roxas’ existence
The dinky MIDI file from vanilla KH2 to the F L U T E in 2.5 is the second biggest glow-up in the whole soundtrack. The first is He’s A Pirate.
I'll try and forgive Riku and Ansem for Xion. It was her choice. She wanted to save him. But I'll NEVER forgive them for Roxas. It was orchestrated suicide built through gaslighting against someone who wasn't even an enemy ! It was wrong ! Plain and simple !

I feel like this should be a mod for the PC version. It's certainly a track I like a hell of a lot more than whatever Dark Domination was trying to be.
A friend did mod this into the game for me but didn't have time to test or post it on nexus, but I could send it your way of you'd like!

What a fantastic video... the soundtracks of the KH series are always something I go back to when I want to relax, and like many commenters here, Roxas is definitely one of my favourite characters in the series. I love this kind of videogame music analysis, because hearing someone explain with words all the feelings that the music conjures is just SO AMAZING!! And there were a few pieces mentioned that I did not know about, so I'm going to look for them - thank you very much for all of this! Note: the first part of Roxas' theme is present in Aqua's, as well! It's just mind-blowing how Shimomura connects so many characters through her music, which makes listening to the OSTs on their own like a separate "playthrough" of the series... <3333

Out of curiosity, would you have any tips for someone thinking about trying to do something like this for the other entries in the series?
@brendanyoung5532 really depends on what you're going for- the main thing I wanted here was to make the pacing betwee scenes feel smoother, especially near the start, and to use remastered and more varied music. I found a version of the cutscene files in which the audio channels were separate, so I could isolate the voices (only exception being the Xion battle). From there, I just tried to make as many of the transitions between scenes happen naturally without fading to black. This worked only sometimes. A few times, to make it less abrupt, I had the audio of the following scene start before switching the video to it. All in all it really depends on your vision for said game. Days was easy to do this with because it's already pretty short, but it was also harder to fill in the blanks in a way that made sense during some of the scenes.
Yeah, I noticed kh-vids working on the audio toggle files. There is such a wonderful selection of fan tracks available (with permission if wanting to use, of course) in addition to all the orchestra mixes. The length of the games is definitely a thing I’m hung up on. Kingdom Hearts 1 being perhaps the next easiest aside ReCoded (with regards to length). But the rest of the Dark Seeker Saga is a little more difficult. I’ve got somewhat of an idea to edit each of the games into movies, some with parts, that correspond to the pacing/scene chronology of Light Novels! Needless to say, however, your project has certainly inspired me.
I see the 13 Xehanorts- the only cursed part I wondered was seeing Xehanort in Elrena’s clothes- Who has the bleach here :’)
Roxas’ Return is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I’ve ever heard. 😢

Thank you for this breakdown. Roxas's theme holds a really special place in my heart. I think cuz it let's me feel fragile like no other song ever could, and being fragile is never allowed in this world we're in.

This is so good! There were so many little moments that just hit you in the feels. The slight variations from the original songs really helped to emphasize and set this piece apart as a wonderful and unique arrangement!
Outstanding arrangement, this must have been a real journey to arrange such a long piece for full orchestra! I like quite a lot the percussions which underscore the track and how the multiple "Nort" song were woven into each other quite smoothly, and the counterpoint between the different sections, awesome work!!
